National Heart Month: Adding Cardio Activities to Your Routine

Since February is National Heart Month, now is a great time to think about how to keep your heart healthy. Aerobic (otherwise known as cardio) exercises help our circulatory systems stay strong. Doing regular cardio exercises has proven to help strengthen the heart’s ability to pump blood through your body and reduce your blood pressure. We know that making a habit of doing cardio activities can be a struggle, so we came up with some easy activities to begin your cardio workout plan.

Cinco de Mayo: Learning about Culture & Heritage

Cinco de Mayo translates to the ‘5th of May.’ It marks the Battle of Puebla. While this historic day is observed to commemorate the efforts of Mexico’s army in the Franco – Mexican War, it has become through the years a more general celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. And, for parents with young children, Cinco de Mayo can be an exciting teaching opportunity to open a young person’s perspective on our global community.

The Battle of Puebla

The battle of Puebla occurred in 1862 at the Puebla de Los Angeles in Mexico. Pitting the French army against that of Mexico, many underestimated the size and strength of the Mexican forces, believing that this battle would be a swift win for France. However, the Mexican armed forces, led by famed military leader General Ignacio Zaragoza, ultimately came to overcome insurmountable odds against the French army and prevent them from occupying the city, a feat which is now celebrated in Mexico as well as area of the United States and abroad.

Local Street Festivals and Parades: Research what is going on in your area. Often times community centers and heritage focused groups will plan a number of events and activities for holidays like Cinco de Mayo. You might find mariachi music concerts, food festivals and more that are occurring around this time of year in your city. Connect with your local community to learn more about the importance of this historic day.

Mexican Themed Meals: There’s no better way to learn about culture and heritage than by discussing it over a shared meal. One of the easiest ways to immerse yourself and your family in a culture that is maybe not your own is by trying their food and learning about some of their common, everyday traditions. Try your hand at cooking up some Mexican cuisine or locate a nearby Mexican restaurant for as authentic an experience that you can get!
