A Day for Mom

Mothers’ Day was first celebrated in 1907, when an American woman named Anna Jarvis held a memorial in honor of her beloved mother and thus began a national campaign to get the second Sunday in May recognized as an annual holiday. By 1914, Jarvis’ dreams for a nationally recognized holiday came true and citizens throughout the US began taking the day to celebrate their mothers with fun and festive traditions.

Show your mom or significant other that you appreciate them with some of these popular Mothers’ Day activities that you could start planning ahead of time.

Breakfast in Bed
Depending on your child’s age, parents might invite them to prepare breakfast for their mother or act as the assistant the more experienced chef of the household. Create a menu that consists of the celebrant’s favorite foods and serve it to them first thing when they wake up. To make the experience even more enjoyable for mom, let her sleep in a littler longer than usual.

Bouquets of Flowers
What mom wouldn’t love being surprised with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from their kids or significant other? Whether you choose to order a professionally designed arrangement or have the kids make their own custom creations, flowers are a simple way to show mom that you care and appreciate her.

Handmade Gifts
Sometimes, the simplest of Mothers’ Day presents can be the most treasured by a mother. Handmade gifts can help mothers remember specific times in their kids childhood and can often times feel more personalized than purchased items. Popular handmade gifts for kids include ceramic cast handprints, poems, artwork, or even jewelry.

A Spa Day
Give mom a special break from her usual routine by indulging her need or a little extra pampering on Mothers’ Day. From a trip to a day spa to a quick and simple mani-pedi, a few extra minutes of mommy-me time would be greatly appreciated by a busy mom on the go.

Family Dinner
Although you might not realize it, most moms would probably cherish extra time spent with their family making memories over something simple like a shared meal, than opening generic presents like a box of chocolates. Let mom choose her favorite meal or local restaurant and treat her to her dream meal for Mothers’ Day.

How will you be celebrating this day with the mothers in your life? Whether you go with any of the above listed activities or a unique idea of your own, we’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
