Cinco de Mayo: Learning about Culture & Heritage

Cinco de Mayo translates to the ‘5th of May.’ It marks the Battle of Puebla. While this historic day is observed to commemorate the efforts of Mexico’s army in the Franco – Mexican War, it has become through the years a more general celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. And, for parents with young children, Cinco de Mayo can be an exciting teaching opportunity to open a young person’s perspective on our global community.

The Battle of Puebla

The battle of Puebla occurred in 1862 at the Puebla de Los Angeles in Mexico. Pitting the French army against that of Mexico, many underestimated the size and strength of the Mexican forces, believing that this battle would be a swift win for France. However, the Mexican armed forces, led by famed military leader General Ignacio Zaragoza, ultimately came to overcome insurmountable odds against the French army and prevent them from occupying the city, a feat which is now celebrated in Mexico as well as area of the United States and abroad.
